Sailing to the Bahamas

So, you're thinking of sailing to the Bahamas. That being so, there are some important things you'll need to know before you go:

Before you can dock your boat in the Bahamas, you must clear Customs and Immigration in one of the country's Port of Entry. This usually means Freeport or Nassau - the two major ports in the Bahamas - but you can also dock and clear customs at small ports on more than a dozen of the Out Islands, including the Abacos, the Biminis, the Exumas, Eleuthera and more.

When you sail into the port, you must fly your yellow quarantine flag to notify customs hat you have not yet been officially admitted into the country. Every passenger aboard your vessel will need to provide proof of citizenship, a passport, and another form of photo identification before filling out an immigration card. You must also be prepared to pay entry fees of $150 to $300(USD) depending upon the length of your boat. Included in the price is a cruising permit, a fishing permit, and departure tax. If you are traveling with more than four people you can expect to pay an additional fee.

Getting There:

For visitors arriving by air, the Bahamas are served through Nassau by most US airlines and by international airlines from Canada and Europe, and to a slightly more limited degree through Freeport.
